🔥 Gas Safe Emergency Callout: What You Pay & What Happens
Last updated: February 2025
It's 10PM. No heating. You Google "emergency boiler repair" and call the first number. Someone shows up in 90 minutes. No uniform, no ID. Works on your boiler for an hour. Hands you a bill for £850 cash.
Is that legit? Or did you just get scammed?
Here's what legitimate Gas Safe emergency callouts cost, what actually happens, and how to avoid cowboy traders.
What Is Gas Safe Registration?
It's the law. Anyone working on gas appliances in the UK MUST be Gas Safe registered. No exceptions.
Why it matters:
- Gas work done wrong = carbon monoxide poisoning, explosions, death
- Insurance won't pay if work done by unregistered person
- Boiler warranty void if serviced/repaired by non-Gas Safe engineer
- It's illegal—you can be prosecuted for allowing unregistered work
How to verify:
- Ask to see Gas Safe ID card (photo ID with unique number)
- Check on Gas Safe Register website: www.gassaferegister.co.uk/find
- ID should list appliances they're qualified for (boilers, cookers, etc.)
⚠️ "I'm CORGI registered" = RED FLAG. CORGI was replaced by Gas Safe in 2009. Anyone saying "CORGI" is either ancient or lying.
Emergency Gas Safe Callout Costs (2025)
💷 What You Actually Pay
Callout fees (emergency):
- Daytime/evening: £95-150
- Night (11PM-8AM): £120-180
- Weekend: £95-150
- Bank holiday: £150-200
Typical repairs (including diagnostic):
- Simple fix (reset, re-pressurize): £95-150
- PCB replacement: £280-450
- Gas valve: £220-380
- Pump: £180-320
- Heat exchanger: £400-800
Most common emergency repair total: £250-500
Fair pricing structure:
- £95 callout fee
- Engineer diagnoses fault (30-45 min)
- Quotes repair cost including parts
- You approve or decline
- If approved, callout fee absorbed into total
- You pay quoted price, not callout + repair separately
Example: £95 callout. Fault is PCB. Quote is £380 including PCB and labour. You pay £380 total, not £475.
What Happens During Emergency Callout
1. Engineer arrives (90-120 min from call):
- Uniform/branded vehicle (legitimate companies)
- Shows Gas Safe ID without you asking
- Confirms your details and boiler issue
2. Diagnosis (30-45 minutes):
- Checks error codes
- Tests ignition, gas supply, electrics
- Inspects key components
- Identifies faulty part
3. Quote (before any repair work):
- Explains fault in plain English
- Quotes fixed price including parts + VAT
- Gives you option to approve or decline
- If part not on van, arranges return visit
4. Repair (30-90 minutes):
- Replaces faulty part
- Tests boiler operation
- Checks safety (gas tightness, combustion, ventilation)
- Explains what was done
5. Payment & paperwork:
- Itemized invoice (labour, parts, VAT)
- Gas Safe certificate if required
- Warranty on parts (usually 12 months)
- Payment by card or bank transfer (cash accepted but not demanded)
Red Flags: Cowboy Traders & Scams
🚨 Walk Away If:
- No Gas Safe ID: "It's in the van" / "I forgot it" / "I'm registered, don't worry"
- Cash only: "ATM is round the corner" / "Save on VAT"
- No written quote: "I'll tell you at the end"
- Pressure tactics: "This will explode" / "Could kill your family" / "Needs doing now or I condemn it"
- Vague pricing: "About £400-ish" / "Depends how long it takes"
- No uniform/vehicle branding: Personal car, no company name
- Can't explain fault: Technical jargon, won't simplify
Action: Say "I need a second opinion, please leave." If they refuse, call 101 (police non-emergency).
Common Scam Tactics
Scam 1: "Your boiler is dangerous, I'm condemning it"
Real engineers only condemn boilers with immediate danger. Scammers use scare tactics to sell you new boiler at inflated price.
Counter: Ask for written report explaining danger. Get second opinion before agreeing to replacement.
Scam 2: "Parts are expensive, best to replace whole boiler"
A £150 part becomes "not worth repairing, new boiler is £3,500".
Counter: Get quote for repair AND replacement. Compare. If repair is under £600 and boiler is under 10 years old, repair makes sense.
Scam 3: "I found more faults while working"
£300 repair becomes £800 after "oh I found this too".
Counter: Insist on new quote for additional work. You approve or decline separately.
Scam 4: Parts markup scam
£80 retail part charged at £250. Common with PCBs.
Counter: Google the part number. If retail is £100 and they're charging £300, question it.
Insurance: Does It Cover Emergency Callouts?
Boiler cover insurance (if you have it):
- Usually covers callout + parts + labour
- Must use their approved contractor (can't choose your own)
- Usually 24/7 helpline
- May have excess (£50-100)
- May exclude boilers over 10 years old
Home emergency insurance:
- Covers boiler breakdown as part of wider policy
- Similar to boiler cover but broader
Buildings/contents insurance:
- Doesn't cover boiler repairs (maintenance issue)
- Might cover consequential damage (boiler leak damages floor)
If you have boiler cover, use it. If not, you pay directly.
